Finding Financial Freedom While Living with Multiple Sclerosis

Updated: Feb 15

Have you experienced one of those moments where you realize your life's path has undeniably changed?

Me too!

Mine happened when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The news came as a shock to me because I didn’t even know what MS was! I left my doctor’s office in a daze and ended up trying to Google everything I could about my disease. All of the articles I read about MS depicted people in wheelchairs, and honestly, I was terrified I would be in a wheelchair too. I was young and I had just started racing mountain bikes and I thought my life was over. If you are interested in those fun stories, I will share with you one on one.

The Invisible Struggles of Living with MS

As time has progressed, my Multiple Sclerosis has relapsed/remitting, which has manifested in my speech, vision, and balance deterioration at different times.

Having MS can be horrible at times; not everyone understands how difficult it can be to live with the invisible symptoms of MS. When you look fine, but people think you are drunk because you lose your balance or can't see well because of triple vision and you walk into door frames. The worst for me was when people treated me like I was drunk or stupid because they couldn't understand what I was saying when I was speaking because I was slurring my words. It's amazing how mean people can be. They had no problem sharing how they felt by their words and actions.

I have come to be ok telling people I have M.S. these days. At the time, I was afraid to tell people that I had M.S. and I was having some issues. A lot of times, I felt trapped in or even betrayed by my own body!

I share this story not for sympathy, because I feel what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I know I have clients that can relate to dealing with something that has changed their life. Thankfully, I found a medication that has helped slow the progression and manage the symptoms, leaving me empowered and invigorated to keep going.

Why Financial Freedom Became a Necessity

However, a new worry bubbled up: I realized I didn't have 45 years to save for my "retirement." I would most likely have to stop working much earlier than my friends. This made me start thinking about my future and what it would look like. People with Multiple Sclerosis often need a lot of additional care, I know that a lot of that responsibility can fall on my family members. I didn’t want to be a burden on my family; I didn’t want them to have to take care of me; even though I know they would. I wanted to make enough money to afford healthcare for myself. But how would I do that? It didn’t become a matter of ‘I wish I made more money’ or ‘I want to make more money.’ It became ‘I have to make more money.’

How I Found Financial Freedom Despite Multiple Sclerosis

With MS, if things progress faster than I want, I won’t have that much time, so making a lot of money in a short amount of time became important to me. I mean, I could only work so hard, so many hours, for so long. I also knew the wealthy knew something I did not, I figured they had a different set of rules they played by when it came to money, and I wanted to know what those were. So, I spent hours and hours researching what they do to make money no matter what the markets doing. I understood it had to do with increasing my cash flow quickly. My money needed to be working for me and not the banks or stock brokers. I figured it out!! When I figured out how easy it is when you know the right moves to make, my stress about money disappeared. STRESS Exasperates MS. Without that stress maybe I will have more time.
